Why BCBS Stands Apart
National Strength.
Local Roots.
Blue Cross Blue Shield isn’t a single company, it’s an association of 34 independent, locally operated plans. Each affiliate is deeply embedded in its state and community, with the financial backing and network reach of the largest health insurance brand in the country.
In the five states of Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Montana, BCBS plans are operated by Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the largest member-owned health insurer in the United States. Because HCSC is member-owned, it reinvests its surplus into member programs and community health rather than distributing profits to shareholders. That structure matters when you need your coverage to be there.
In South Carolina, BCBS has served residents for over 75 years and carries an AM Best A+ (Superior) rating, the strongest possible financial strength designation, reaffirmed in January 2026, and the only health insurer in South Carolina to hold it.
Largest Member-Owned Insurer in the US
HCSC (parent of BCBS TX, IL, OK, NM, and MT) serves 26 million+ members and operates as a not-for-profit entity, surplus goes back to members, not Wall Street.
J.D. Power #1 in 8 of 10 States Surveyed
BCBS companies ranked first or second in member satisfaction in 8 of the 10 states included in J.D. Power’s Medicare Advantage study, more than any other carrier family.
96% of Hospitals. 95% of Doctors.
Nearly every hospital and the vast majority of physicians in the country accept BCBS. That acceptance rate is among the highest of any carrier, critical for members who travel, see multiple specialists, or want the freedom of a PPO.

Telehealth & 24/7 Nurse Access

BCBS Medicare Advantage plans include care management programs for members with chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart failure, COPD, and hypertension. Some affiliates include remote patient monitoring and dedicated care coordinators.
Out-of-Pocket Maximum
BCBS Medicare Advantage plans set MOOPs ranging from approximately $4,000 to $7,550 in-network, below the federal maximum of $9,350. HMO-POS plans in some markets offer MOOPs as low as $4,000.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
America’s Most Trusted
Medigap Provider
Blue Cross Blue Shield writes approximately one-quarter of all Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies in the United States, more than any other single carrier. That scale translates to competitive pricing, strong claims processing infrastructure, and wide recognition among providers.
BCBS Medigap plans are available through most of the 34 BCBS affiliates in the markets we serve. Commonly offered plan letters include Plan G, which covers your 20% Part B coinsurance after the annual deductible, and Plan N, which offers lower premiums in exchange for modest copays at some visits.
For beneficiaries who value predictable costs, nationwide provider access, and the freedom to see any Medicare-accepting doctor without referrals, a BCBS Medigap policy paired with a standalone Part D plan is one of the most straightforward paths through Medicare.
